Ballad, Swing, Bebop, there's something for all levels and all tastes. The walking is a bass line who consist of playing one note per beat...always. In this first lesson, we're going to start with a simple walking, consisting of roots and fifth. The chords are Cmaj7 Amin7 Dmin7 G7. After Roots and Fifth, we'll add octave. The chords are the same as before. Here is a lick based on the G# dimished scale. This scale is G# A# B C# D E F G G# The tempo is very fast, 160, with a lot of semiquavers. Observe the fingering on the video, and work very slowly with the metronome. Have fun. II V I is a chord progression very common in Jazz. In key of C, we get the following chords: Dm7 - G7 Cmaj7 This lick is built with the C major scale and some chromatismes. Otherwise, no special difficulties, it is a simple plan that will sound great on a fretless. Observe the fingering on the video, and work very slowly with the metronome ... as always. Have fun. This lick is based on a Em7 chords (E G B D) but with a lot of chromatismes.
Here a transcription of the great saxophonist Ornette Coleman. This song is called "Chipie". This theme very melodic and rhythmic moves a lot. You will have to work slowly, measure after measure. If you have a fretless sleeping somewhere, it's time for the show. The key of this piece is F Major.. I played at a tempo of 130 on the video. The eighth will be played ternary. ![]() Transcription PDF: The biggest hit of the famous saxophonist John Coltrane. This piece of legend appears on the album "Giant Steps" published in 1960. The bass player is Paul Chambers. I play the theme in chords and the walking. ![]() Transcription PDF:
Here is a beautiful song from the album "Rhythm n'jazz" of the great Alain Caron: "Flight of the bee bop bee". The master plays a signature F bass 6-strings (fretted and fretless). This theme is a level very difficult but interesting work. The tempo is fast, there are many sixteenth notes and as you can see from the video, the fingers move much. It is not necessary to have a 6 string bass to play this theme, a 5-string will suffice. ![]() Transcription in PDF: Jonas Hellborg is a Swedish bassist somewhat underestimated. Armed with his Warwick signature bass and amps, Jonas delivers his uncompromising music since ... well a long time. I suggest the theme of the song "Escape" from the album "Icon" was released in 2003. We find the complex Indian rhythms with full of sixteenth notes and a theme that will rust your fingers! ![]() Another lick of Jonas Hellborg with the final of "Savitri" from the album "Good people in the times of evil" released in 2000. I let you admire the wonderful theme of this piece or you can see a nice rhythmic effect towards the end. ![]() On the menu that day, I suggest the theme of a beautiful trio called "Natural High Trio. Composed by Alain Caron on bass, fretless acoustic 6 string bass, Frank Gambale on acoustic guitar and Otmaro Ruiz on piano. I highly recommend their album You can play the theme on a 5 or 6 string, fretless in preference. ![]() Transcription in PDF: This song is the first preview of the new album of Jonas Hellborg, with Mattias IA Eklund on guitar and Ranjit Barot on drums. Jonas plays a prototype of his Warwick signature bass, it's a fretless model, brown finish, with a F-hole and no volume button.
